Originally formed in 1989, The Cranberries are an Irish rock group that has enjoyed a significant amount of success; particularly during the latter half of the 1990s and the first half of the 2000s. The main singer (Dolores O'Riordan) is known as possessing a particularly sonorous voice and a decidedly Irish inflection. One of the major misconceptions surrounding this group is that they tend to be classified as alternative rock. On the contrary, many of their songs contain elements of punk, pop rock and even Irish folk flavours. This is arguably one of the same reasons why The Cranberries rose to fame within several different musical sectors. However, the impression that they continue to make upon music as a whole is undeniable. Some of their most well-known hit singles include 'Zombie', 'Linger', 'Ode to My Family' and 'Free to Decide'. Most notably, their song 'Dreams' was featured within the Mission Impossible soundtrack (1996). It is also interesting to observe that The Cranberries had taken a hiatus of no less than six years between 2003 and 2009. This was primarily due to O'Riordan and guitarist Noel Hogan pursuing solo careers. However, this did not last and the band soon reunited. Since this time, the band has focused upon writing new material as well as playing their classical compositions which rose to fame in the 1990s. The 2016 release of their album 'Something Else' was the first fully unplugged collection and the entire group continues playing in venues throughout Europe as well as the United States. Their musical style has been described as mirroring artists such as Sinead O'Connor as well as Siouxsie and the Banshees. However, O'Riordan insists that her trademark yodelling was actually a result of inspiration from her father. To this day, The Cranberries continue to exert an active influence over numerous musical genres.
